Part I
1 . Who does ' I ' refer to in this story ? ( इस कहानी में ' I ' कौन है ? )
Ans . ' I ' in this story is the thief .
इस कहानी में 'I' चोर है।
2. What is he ' a fairly successful hand ' at ? ( वह किस काम को करने से काफी सफल हाथ है ? )
Ans . He is a successful hand at stealing . He takes people into confidence and robs them . He had already done so several times .
वह चोरी करने में एक सफल हाथ है। वह लोगों को विश्वास में लेता है और उन्हें लूटता है। वह पहले भी कई बार ऐसा कर चुका था।
3. What does he get from Anil in return for his work ? ( अपने काम के बदले में अनिल क्या प्राप्त करता है ? )
Ans . Anil is not able to pay him regularly for the work done by him . He gives him two times meal return for his work .

Ans. The thief thinks that Anil will become sad when he discovers the theft . Not for the loss of mone but for the loss of trust .

2. What does he say about the different reactions of people when they are robbed ? ( वह विभिन्न लोगों की प्रतिक्रियाओं के बारें क्या कहता है जब उन्हें लूटा जाता है ? )
Ans . The thief tells about the reactions of different people when they are robbed . The greedy ma shows fear . The rich man shows anger and the poor man shows acceptance .
चोर अलग-अलग लोगों की प्रतिक्रियाओं के बारे में बताता है जब उन्हें लूट लिया जाता है। लालची माँ डर दिखाती है। अमीर आदमी गुस्सा दिखाता है और गरीब आदमी स्वीकृति दिखाता है।

Ans . Yes , Anil realises that he has been robbed . But he pretended not to know that .

1. What are Hari Singh's reactions to the prospect of receiving an education ? Do they chang over time ? ( Hint : Compare , for example , the thought : " I knew that once I could write like a educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve " with these later thoughts " Whole sentences , I knew , could one day bring me more than a few hundred rupees . It was simple matter to steal and sometimes just as simple to be caught . But to be a really big man a clever and respected man , was something else . " ) What makes him return to Anil ?. ( शिक्षा प्राप्त करने की बात पर हरिसिंह की क्या प्रतिक्रिया होती हैं ? क्या वे समय के साथ बदलती रही ? )
Ans . Anil was teaching Hari singh to write whole sentences and to add numbers . At this Hari Sing thought that if he could write like an educated man , there would be no limit to what he could achieve in his profession of looting others . Then it would be very easy for him to cheat peopl easily . Later , he realised the importance of being an educated person . He said to himself that he knew how to write whole sentences , he would be a really big man , a clever and respected man and was something else than mere thief . At this thought , he decided to return to Anil . His conscience did not allow him to betray Anil's faith in him .
अनिल हरि सिंह को पूरे वाक्य लिखना और संख्याएँ जोड़ना सिखा रहा था। इस पर हरि सिंह ने सोचा कि अगर वह एक शिक्षित व्यक्ति की तरह लिख सकता है, तो दूसरों को लूटने के अपने पेशे में वह क्या हासिल कर सकता है, इसकी कोई सीमा नहीं होगी। तब उसके लिए लोगों को आसानी से धोखा देना बहुत आसान होगा। बाद में, उन्हें एक शिक्षित व्यक्ति होने के महत्व का एहसास हुआ। उसने अपने आप से कहा कि वह जानता है कि पूरे वाक्य कैसे लिखना है, वह वास्तव में एक बड़ा आदमी होगा, एक चतुर और सम्मानित व्यक्ति होगा और केवल चोर के अलावा कुछ और होगा। इस विचार पर, उन्होंने अनिल के पास लौटने का फैसला किया। उनकी अंतरात्मा ने उन्हें अनिल के विश्वास को धोखा देने की अनुमति नहीं दी।

Ans . Anil had come to know that Hari Singh had stolen his money at night when he was asleep was quite clear to him that Hari Singh was a thief . But he did not hand him over to the police The reason was that Anil wanted to reform Hari Singh . He had known this fact from Hari Singh return to him . So , Anil did not hand Hari Singh over to the police . Anil was an idealist . He wa quite different from other employers . He knows that social evils like stealing could not be cure through police and punishment . Anil's way to treating Hari Singh was the only way to refor him .
अनिल को पता चल गया था कि हरि सिंह ने रात में उसका पैसा चुरा लिया था, जब वह सो रहा था, तो उसे यह स्पष्ट था कि हरि सिंह चोर था। लेकिन उसने उसे पुलिस के हवाले नहीं किया, इसका कारण यह था कि अनिल हरि सिंह को सुधारना चाहता था। वह इस तथ्य को हरि सिंह के उनके पास लौटने से जान गया था। इसलिए अनिल ने हरि सिंह को पुलिस के हवाले नहीं किया। अनिल एक आदर्शवादी थे। वह अन्य नियोक्ताओं से काफी अलग था। वह जानता है कि चोरी जैसी सामाजिक बुराइयों को पुलिस और दंड से दूर नहीं किया जा सकता। हरि सिंह का इलाज करने का अनिल का तरीका ही उनके लिए एकमात्र तरीका था।
